About Secondhand Hounds

Founded in July of 2009, Secondhand Hounds is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit animal rescue organization located in Minnetonka, Minnesota. While providing safe shelter, daily necessities and excellent veterinary care, they help dogs and cats in our community find permanent, loving homes.

Every year, approximately 6.5 million companions enter U.S. animal shelters nationwide. Of those, nearly 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats. To compare, about 3.2 million animals are adopted each year, and 710,000 animals who entered shelters as strays are returned to their owners. This leaves 2.6 million furry friends looking for a home every year.

Sadly, because many shelters lack the resources to care for the animals they have, approximately 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized every year. Secondhand Hounds does everything they can to prevent this from happening, rescuing dogs and cats from shelters that euthanize around the Midwest. Secondhand Hounds also takes in cats and dogs from local shelters who are above capacity and from owners who can no longer provide for their pets.
